If your child is in secondary school in New Zealand and you're not sure how the system works โ this guide is for you.
Year Levels
NZ secondary school runs from Year 9 (age 13) to Year 13 (age 17-18). Year 11 is when qualifications start. Year 13 is the final year before university.
Qualifications
Most schools use NCEA (NZ's own system). Some offer Cambridge or IB. Your child's school will tell you which pathway they're on. All three are valid for university entry.
University Entrance
This is the minimum your child needs to be eligible for university. It's based on their Year 12 and 13 results. Ask their school if they're on track.
Your Role
You don't need to understand every detail of NCEA credits or university applications. What matters most is: showing up to parent-teacher interviews, asking your child about their studies regularly, making sure they have a quiet place to study, helping them meet deadlines, and encouraging them when it gets hard.
Key Dates to Know
August-September is when university applications and scholarships open. October-December is deadline season. January-February is when offers come. Talk to your child about these dates early.
If English Isn't Your First Language
Your child's school should provide an interpreter for important meetings. Ask for one. Your child is also entitled to free ESOL support. These are your rights โ use them.
Financial Support
University costs money, but there are student loans (interest-free in NZ) and student allowances (free money based on income). Your child can apply through StudyLink. Some families don't apply because they don't know it exists โ don't be one of them.
